Agronomic Scenarios

To evaluate the C sequestration potential in Czech regions, we consider 2 basic model farming systems:

  • Cropping system without livestock production (Cp – crop production): farming without fodder crops and without the application of farmyard and organic fertilizers.
  • Cropping system with livestock production (Ap – animal production): fodder crops are incorporated into the crop rotation, and 2 thirds of the N dose are applied in the form of farmyard manure.

Both systems are further divided into two subtypes:

  • Intensive (Cm – commercial): crop rotation with fewer commercial crops (including bioenergetic ones), rather considering the removal of post-harvest residues, deep plowing, higher doses of fertilizers, and irrigation (CpCm, ApCm).
  • Protective (Rg – regenerative): a higher number of crops in the crop rotation (including less traditional ones), inclusion of catch crops, rather considering leaving post-harvest residues, reduced tillage, lower doses of fertilizers, and absence of irrigation (CpRg),
    or:
perennial N-fixing crops with fodder harvest and/or mulching, fertilization with farmyard manure/organic fertilizers, and reduced cultivation during stand renewal (ApRg).

Initial C content values in the soil organic matter were derived from the digital Map of Humus Reserves in Agricultural Soils of the Czech Republic (Žížala, 2020).
